Platform beds are an inexpensive way to add clean, modern style. Just returned from a week in the Riviera Maya in Mexico at this all inclusive resort with my older brother and his family. . . it was a well-deserved break and so wonderfully relaxing that it was a little hard to get home to responsibilities (kitchen 😕). I know I promised to share how we built our daughter's platform bed. Unfortunately, the construction part is accompanied by explanations but no photos... sorry! Mr DIY pretty much took on this project on his own, so I'll let him explain how he built this modern bed for just $125!🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨 It's Mr DIY here. I found a bed online that she liked and designed plans specific to her Queen size mattress, as well as the height she wanted. I provide links below to the products I used to build Abby's bed. Abby and I carried the bleached wood to her room and built the bed in place. You will find them under the building instructions. I used 2 x 10 lumber for the bed frame box. Abby's mattress is a queen (which measures 80" x 60"), so I built the box with an inside dimension of 80-1/2" x 60-1/2". This way, no screws are visible on the outside of the bed. I used 2x6 lumber for the cross supports...3 - 2x6 cut to 60-1/2". Using 2x6 also allows the mattress to sit inside the frame, preventing it from slipping. I reinforced the supports using 1 x 2s around the edge of the frame box to support the plywood. She wanted it to be visible even when the pillows were resting on the bed, so we made it 15" tall. The headboard was constructed using 2 x 6s and consists of 2 sides and a top. Abby didn't want shelves, but it would be an easy addition to this project. I secured the headboard to the bed frame with screws, being liberal so it was firmly anchored. Cindy and Abby sanded all the edges and surfaces of the bed so it was smooth and the mattress and sheets didn't snag. If you have any questions about this process, don't hesitate to ask! After sanding the bed, it was time to paint. I didn't bother to prep the bed, as I figured I would just have to paint an extra coat or two of paint. I used about 24 oz of paint. After the first coat I noticed some gaps and hairline cracks that needed to be masked. Using wood putty and putty I filled them in as best I could could. It made a huge difference! After 2 coats, the grain of the wood was still visible. It dried quickly and went really fast.
