Duke In Pics: Building The Hollows Quad

Victoria Johnson, with her mother Michelle by her side, took a much-needed break from the frenzy of moving into the new Hollows Quad residence on Friday as she gazed out of her suite's living room windows. After nearly two and a half years of construction, the Hollows Quad opened last week to nearly 700 upperclass students. Home for 700 upper class students

An aerial photo by Skanska, the construction company that built the $92 million Hollows Quad residence, captures the Towerview Road site in November 2017. The Hollows Quad offers 147 suites with each unit comprising one to five bedrooms, a or two bathrooms. , a living room and a kitchenette. The opening of Hollows Quad, along with the reopening of Craven Quad after completed renovations, brings Duke closer to its goal of housing all upperclass students on West Campus. "It's exciting to add a different housing option to West Campus," said Joe Gonzalez, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Residential Life. "The suites offer students a new way to live, attend classes, socialize and work on campus."

Nearly 300 construction workers on site

On August 10, 2018, Skanska captured cranes, vehicles, and crews at the Hollows Quad site. The framework was nearly complete by then, including the deck that contains the Hollows B crews' third and fourth floor common room spaces. Skanska continued work on the slate roof and began the exterior in brick of buildings. Nearly 300 construction workers, project managers and other utility specialists have worked at the Hollows Quad over the past year. "When I look at buildings of this size, I just think of all the effort it takes to complete them," said Hector M. Hernandez, project manager for the facilities management department for the Hollows Quad. The Hollows Quad has 837 windows in total, which bring plenty of natural light to common areas and suites. As Residence Coordinator, Enty lives in a private Hollows apartment and will organize social events, plan room allocations, provide advice on housing issues, and run training sessions for Hollows Quad students and resident assistants. "You don't often get the chance in residence life to create community in a brand new residence hall."

Ecological characteristics

Hector M. Hernandez, project manager of the facilities management department for the Hollows, inspects the dryer ducts in the first-floor laundry room at Hollows A this summer. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is expected to certify the Hollows Quad with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver status, which takes into account the location of the structure, water efficiency, energy consumption, materials, innovation and more. Skanska built the Hollows Quad with dual-flush toilets, lights with vacancy sensors, windows covered with transparent film to reduce heat, and elevator shafts with heating and cooling to prevent temperature loss . It will be a very bright space for the students. »

To relocate

Last Friday, students and parents hauled clothes, furniture, and other essentials into the Hollows Quad.
