San Diego Hardwoods just finished refinishing our maple floors throughout the entire first floor of our home, and the results are amazing. Andy is a perfectionist, treating floor finishes as if they were a work of art. He was completely trustworthy in our home and very communicative, calling at least twice a day to give us updates on the status of the project and our instructions regarding walking on the floors. He also does heavy commercial work and invited us to visit his job sites to see his team in action, to help us familiarize ourselves with his work product. He works on floors of all types of wood and in all conditions, as you will see in his photos. This business turns out to be one of the best decisions I have made.

I have bamboo floors in my loft that were not in good condition due to wear and tear. I was still a little uneasy as I knew that redesigned hardwood floors aren't really designed to be refinished (or so I thought) like real hardwood. I don't remember how it broke down, but to 1) completely redo the entire second floor and stairs, 2) reinstall a large portion of the floor in the master bedroom closet where the wood had been cut for the units built-ins, and 3) tear out the existing flooring in the downstairs living room and install new wood to match the hardwood on the stairs and upstairs. I challenge anyone to say the closet is "patched" or the living room isn't the same hardwood, but engineered. He took rough, ugly floors that had lots of dirt, snags, knot holes and deep scratches and turned them into a work of art that says "all new perfection". The floors are absolutely beautiful and will last for years and years.

We used a commercial water-based polyurethane which provides maximum durability. That may have been enough, but we've had wood floors in the past that have been quite scratched, so we wanted the maximum. Cut down the beautiful hardwood floor in the closet to install some really cheap and ugly shelving (which we in turn ripped out), but that goes with the territory of buying someone else's house!

Restoring a hardwood floor When you restore a floor, you are repairing a damaged floor. Choosing when to restore or refinish your hardwood floor It depends on the period of the floor: Let's say you bought a house that was built in the 1940s, around the time of World War II. Most homes in the Northeast (where I'm from) have red oak floors because they were readily available back then. Oak is also one of the best woods for floors (and good for a parlor tower, but that's another floor fact). To get it back on track, this type of floor would only need a simple touch-up. Now let's talk about the best time to restore a floor: Take a Victorian house, my favorite. Homes of this era had wood floors made of mixed and rare species such as walnut, mahogany, maple, and quarter-sawn oak. In fact, in the 1920s, you could order any of these floors. Because these different species were so rare, they were often only ⅜" thick as opposed to the current ¾" thick. Hardwood Floor Experience When I was younger and just starting out, I started my business in Newburgh, New York. I would walk into these houses and find VCT tiles, then tar paper, then patterned flooring under it all. It's funny, I've been doing this for over 40 years and I've been lucky enough to restore some amazing floors.
