Compare the four global exposure classes and three gloss levels defined by the Concrete Polishing Association of America. Depending on the diamond grit you use to polish a concrete floor, you can achieve different overall exposure ranges and different levels of shine, from matte to a glassy, mirror-like finish. The Concrete Polishing Council classifies finished gloss levels in ranges of 1 to 4 and overall exposures as A, B, C or D, depending on the degree of exposure. As you begin to polish the floor in successive passes, you will generally move on to finer diamond abrasives bonded in a plastic or resin matrix to achieve higher degrees of shine. Here are the four levels of polish and the degree of shine you can expect to achieve at each level:

Level 1 (flat)

A level 1 floor polish can usually be achieved by stopping below the 100 grit resin bond. Level 2 (satin)

A honed Level 2 polish is achieved by stopping at the 400 grit resin bond, producing a low sheen finish. Level 4 (very polite)

This level of polish produces a high degree of shine, so when you stand directly above the surface, you can see your reflection with complete clarity. A level 4 polish is achieved by switching to a 3,000 grit resin bond diamond or by buffing the floor with a high speed polisher fitted with specialist polishing pads. Today, specifications for polished concrete now include specified gloss readings, determined using gloss meters (see table). Gloss values express the degree of reflection when light hits the surface of the concrete floor and range from 20-30 (low gloss) to 70-80 (high gloss). 60-80

Overall exposures range from "cream", with very little exposure (Class A), to significant overall exposure up to ¼ inch (Class D).
